The brief
Mimi’s Bakehouse started as a single, family bakery in 2010. It has now grown to become an Edinburgh institution famous for its baked goods and family-friendly savouries. I recently did some food photography of Mimi’s Bakehouse’s products for their new refreshed website and to use on their social channels. Cake photography, like any other product photography, needs to make the subject front and centre, with minimal distracting or competing elements. So keeping the images clean, crisp and fresh was an important factor in the shoot.
Moodboard
Prior to any shoot, I prepare a moodboard that contains a selection of visuals that show the creative direction of the photoshoot. It was important to use Mimi’s brand colours of baby blue and pink, so they formed a crucial part of the colour palette.
The moodboard also had examples of cake photography done in a similar style, which helps the client get an idea of what the final images will look like.
The photoshoot
Cake photography is something that’s always a joy to photograph because they’re beautiful without needing much styling. And Mimi’s selection of cakes is no exception. Here are some of my favourites from the shoot.
Traybakes and brownies
In addition to their cakes, Mimi’s also has a selection of traybakes, brownies and special occasion bakes. They also cater to special dietary requirements and have special (and equally tasty) vegan and gluten free boxes.
I hope you enjoyed these cake photographs as much as I did taking them. If you’d like to see more of my food and drink photography, please see my full portfolio.
