Recently I had the opportunity to take some lifestyle and food photography for The Edinburgh Butter Co. for their website, social media channels and press materials.
Established after a trip to Australia in 2017, Nick and Hilary Sinclair thought to bring the artisan butter market to Scotland. Despite the UK having very high quality dairy, most of its artisan butter was actually imported from France. Identifying that gap in the market inspired them to make their own and eventually, supplying establishments like The Balmoral Hotel, Contini and various high-end delis across the country.
The aims for this photoshoot were to:
- Capture process shots of making the butter
- Photograph founders Hilary and sales director Chloe in action
- Convey the atmosphere of the butter production process as handmade and artisan, against a typically clinical industrial setting
Watching Chloe separating the curds of butter was a surprisingly satisfying process to watch.
With their focus on supporting local industries, their cream is sourced only a few miles from their Edinburgh premises.
The butter needs to be “washed” several times in order to separate the buttermilk.
Supporting the local food industry
It was fascinating to watch the entire process from cream to butter, and even more so to be able to capture. With The Edinburgh Butter Co being used in many local establishments closes the circle between producer and consumer, helping the local economy, environment and people’s quality of life.
We were looking to get a variety of photos done for press purposes including profiles of staff, our products and the production process. Alexis did a great job of capturing all of these without interrupting our busy production schedule. She was friendly, organised and adaptable to what we were looking for. We were really pleased with the results and would happily recommend her to other local food businesses!Chloe, The Edinburgh Butter Co.
