This photographic series highlights the maraschino cherry—a small and often contrary pop culture symbol that balances innocence and maturity; kitsch and glamour.

The maraschino cherry

When looking up the history of the maraschino cherry, I was surprised to find that they initially were made from the Croatian marasca cherry that was preserved and pickled.

Their growing popularity amongst the European rich and famous meant that there was not enough supply to fulfil demand. So the more commonly known maraschino cherries we get today were born. I like to think of it as a glam up, a re-brand of sorts.

A pop culture symbol

A maraschino has a complex and often contrary symbolism in pop culture. Atop an ice cream sundae it alludes innocence, yet with Katy Perry’s cherry chapstick, it signifies anything but.

One of the main themes I like to incorporate in my work is unexpected contrasts, which made the maraschino cherry the ideal muse for this photography series.

No matter which meaning you give it, you can’t deny its most striking and bold appearance. Their shiny radioactive red adds the perfect shot of retro kitsch – the final chef’s kiss to any cake or cocktail.
